Henry Huggins Beverly Cleary Jacqueline Rogers Books

I love Beverly Cleary. My mom read the books, then read gave her books to me to read and now I’m giving them to my son to read. I read this book out loud with my son. Even though he’s perfectly capable of reading by himself, he loves the snuggle time of reading with mama.

This was a fun little book. Each chapter finds Henry trying a different tactic to earn enough money to buy himself a bicycle. Beezus helps him but definitely has a supporting role in the book – it isn’t really Henry and Beezus as best buddies like the title implies. Beezus always has her annoying little sister tagging along – a little preview of how ornery she’ll be in her own books.
My son and I loved comparing life in the 50s when this book was first published to life today. For instance, Henry sells gum to his friends at two pieces for a penny. A bag of chips cost a dime. My son thought this astounding but he knew this was a REALLY long time ago because his mom wasn’t even born yet.

I loved the wholesomeness of this book. That the kids in it were basically nice and said things like “jeepers”. No one was sassy to their parents like in so many middle-grade books today. This is a great book to read and discuss with your middle grade reader.

Henry Huggins Beverly Cleary Jacqueline Rogers Books Reviews

Our seven year old recently discovered the Beverly Cleary books and he has been devouring them. They are good, wholesome entertainment that hasn't changed in fifty years and it was nice to find this one for him.
My kids read this series when they were younger so i bought the first one for my grand kids to see if they'd like it too. Like it? They LOVE it. All the garbage kids are reading now days, it's nice to have an old fashioned nice book to read.
With the variety of activities available whether screens or the outdoors it is a great moment when you hear laughter from the room and discover your child enthralled by a book. As my young reader completes a chapter he excitedly shares the Henry's adventures. He especially delighted in Henry's entrepreneurial experience when his pet guppies multiply beyond his control.
I always enjoy Beverly Cleary's books because she seems to remember so clearly what it feels like to be a kid. "Ellen Tebbits" is no exception. Ellen deals with not dressing like the other girls, wondering if her teacher likes her, getting caught exaggerating her horseback riding abilities, and fighting with her best friend. I laughed out loud re-reading this childhood favorite, but I also remembered the days when getting teased by a pesky neighborhood boy seemed like the worst thing in the world and being allowed to bake brownies without a grownup watching over your shoulder was sheer bliss. Hooray for Beverly Cleary!
My 8 year old son and I both enjoyed reading this book together. Each chapter is its own little story about henry, ribsy and his friends. Some parts you could tell were written in the 60s (who goes and buys horse meat for their dog?!) but it was still a good story. I had to explain to my son what a typewriter was and how you couldn't just backspace and fix a mistake! I remember reading the Ramona series when I was growing up and had no idea there was a Henry series as well by the same author. We will be reading more Henry Huggins books for sure!
Beverly Cleary is one of the real childhood book writers who will last forever. Her books are loved dearly by all children I know. This one is no exception. Cleary is able to mix a child's world with adult perspectives, so that the narrative is easily accessible to a child, but a bit challenging around the edges.
I won't try to repeat what others have said. Beverly Cleary understands children like no other author I've ever read, and her Henry/Beezus/Ramona books (I've read them all) are a delight. But when I purchased the edition of "Henry and Beezus," I was disappointed to find that the wonderful original illustrations by Louis Darling have been replaced by mediocre sketches by some other artist. Darling's illustrations were so full of life and true to the characters! These are generic-looking, pedestrian and altogether inferior. Please, --bring back the originals!
