“Bound by Illness, Freed by Grace” is an inspiring memoir about a woman’s lifetime battle with chronic pain. The dysfunction in her childhood caused her young adult years to be wrought with a series of bad choices. What eventually brought the author to her knees was debilitating pain. Simply existing from day to day became a herculean effort. Due to her chronic pain and illness, she had been stripped of all that gave her significance. The things that defined her as a person, including her marriage, career, house, finances, health … were all gone. Life had been filled with so many peaks and valleys, that she felt as though she had climbed over the peaks of broken glass and slid into the valleys in her own blood. The author outlines how her relationship with God influences her inner self to maintain her hope and a sense of purpose. This story details the strength of character received by an individual’s faith. Scriptures, prayers and personal experiences are used to demonstrate how the writer’s Christian belief system impacts all areas of her life. This book is intended to bring hope and inspiration to those with chronic pain. It is also intended to provide insight to anyone dealing with a person who has these issues. This memoir is a well written, fearless and informative perspective of the daily struggles of living with chronic illness. There is a spiritual and insightful message that should be read by anyone who either suffers with chronic pain, or knows someone with chronic pain. The book will provide deeper insights to the thoughts and frustrations as well provide hope to those who experience this condition.

I truly enjoyed reading this book. It was well written and easy to read. The authors faith and courage to preserve is remarkable, a true hero to others suffering from chronic pain and illness. And the way she explains her life is most courageous
I started reading the book as soon as it came. I didn't put it down til I finished reading it. I also have chronic pain, not as severe as Maureen, but very painful. Maureen gave me so much insight on my own feelings, that I'm not crazy or faking it, as I have been accused on many occasions. Very well written and informative. Reading this book is a must for everyone to read, especially to those who are fortunate to have good health.
Maureen is my long time friend since 1976. I went to the prayer meeting with my friends Rick and Lou and Lou was interpreting for us. Maureen was in awe and wanted to learn sign languages. Since then she had learned a lot by hanging around with us a lot.

When she wrote that book, I right away ordered it and when it came in the mail. I read it and was in tears. I even promote her book to my several friends and families who have a similar illness like Maureen has. I am so proud of her and know she has the talents to write a book. Just wanted to say "I love this book and will treausee it forever!" Debbie Mingo
I really enjoyed this autobiography. Ms Brady shares her story with honesty and clear description of her illnesses and all their awful effects on her body, mind and emotions. She shares her childhood, parental relationships (cause and effects), and her marriages. The good and the bad. I would like to have read more about her recovery from her second husband's abuse for a more complete picture of her life. As her health continues to deteriorate, Ms Brady shares how she had a spiritual and emotional breakthrough in all her suffering and helplessness, through her faith and trust in God. She is not cured or healed, but is in a place of acceptance of her condition, and has learnt how to accomplish things when she can and rest when she can't. She has found peace in prayer and God's word, and in encouraging others through online support groups for people with chronic illness.
I rate this book a five star, as I suffer from chronic illness and this author
writes her life story (to this point) in such a way that I could relate and
share with my husband some issues that was difficult for me to understand, and
through her writing, he understands my chronic illness better. Maureen Brady is a
great author! Very easy reading and enjoyable...I cried, I laughed a little,
but mostly, I related. Maureen bares her soul and for that, she's a real special
lady with real talent. This book is a very inspirational "must read!"
I just read your book last night. I couldn't put it down. I learned so much. You have an amazing strength and disposition because any time I was ever with you I only experienced your smile, warmth, fun-loving, exuberant, caring, generous disposition. I needed to be educated on the life of a person with chronic illness. I imagined that this meant you dealt with pain on a daily basis, which in and of itself you would think is enough of a Herculean burden but there is so much more I didn't know. For instance, how even doing one thing like the dishes or going out could drain you of all energy and bring on such intense, time-robbing pain for weeks to come. To learn that a great deal of planning was necessary in every aspect of your life so as to avoid set-backs is amazing, was extremely eye-opening, and educating. Another point in your book was you being viewed as a child as being lazy. Oh my gosh. Read the book, folks! This cannot be more false. Your energy, strength, determination, planning, and actions through out your life say otherwise. I doubt that most people could have accomplished what you did everyday in your daily life as well as deal with countless tragedies and obstacles. On top of that, you never wallowed in pity. Your strength and ability to look for solutions day in and day out, minute to minute, is something I wish for all people who suffer chronic pain. You offer so much hope and happiness.
Your book was informative and inspiring. You share what you have learned as a person with chronic illness. I knew so little. You also share what has worked for you stressing that everyone's experiences and ways of coping are different and need to be individually managed. Your respect for chronic illness, how it affects others, and life and it's inhabitants and practices are evident and remarkable in your book. You, Maureen C. Brady, are an amazing and inspirational human being. It was an honor and truly beneficial for me to have read your book. I want more. Is it possible to write another book? I think Bound by Illness, Freed by Grace is a great foundation for your next book (I know, I am a "bit" assumptive)....Bound by Illness, Freed by Grace; My Memoirs. In this book you would elaborate even more. I want more of what you have already given me; your life experiences with all the details added and your emotional, intellectual, and physical take on it all.
Maureen’s writing draws me in and takes me along for the bumpy ride with her heartwarming, poignant, and no-holds-barred accounts of her lifelong struggles with health, relationships and pain. Not many people would be able to find faith in God and the silver linings that she has clearly discovered through her varied and unique life experiences.
